Motivated by the way that Vessel of Regret turned out, I started working on the next tune on my own. This was initially called Proboscis (using my ultra-geeky method of referencing tunes in alphabetical order using some random word.... Vessel of Regret was previously Neanderthal and Obelisk was between the two which amounted to nothing).
At this point, I was still experimenting with the mic'ed setup I had been using (i.e. the Peavey Centry head played thru a Kustom 15" cabinet and mic'ed with an SM-57 and an MXL condenser mic). I used the Kramer Pacer which was the only guitar with high enough action to tune down to drop C.
The song basically developed out of this riff idea:
Tyrant's Fall Original Riff #1
Here's another riff idea that was worked into the arrangement:
Tyrant's Fall Original Riff #2
After I had most of the song recorded, I started the search for someone to do the vocals. This was one of the areas on Indaba that was challenging to come by. I ended up chatting with a guy named Lucas Bledsoe who expressed an interest in giving a crack at the vocals. Although I was skeptical, he ended up writing lyrics and recording a vocal track which, I think, are a perfect match for the song.
Here are the lyrics:
My soul lies, asunder. dead in arms my brother,
This dry land. mourns her dead Has brought me. to my knees.
No cold like sting of steel deep into the back. drawing blood the crimson life dripping down the deceiver's knife
You claimed you brought peace and love, Instead you hand me decapitated dove. Now my wife, my children, my land all soaked red, all by your hand.
Kill, covet, destroy. your death reign. is ending. can you taste that? our dead, call for your blood
Death to the autarch Death to the autarch Death to the autarch Death to the autarch
Crushed under 90,000 pounds steel death sending tremors through the ground. the ring of fire, the pile of dead. all this debt falls upon on your head.
We're not afraid of death or pain, we've lost so much, all that's left is gain. its our blood that waters the soil This thirsty land our life's poured over.
your death reign. is ending. can you taste that? our dead, call for your blood
Death to the autarch Death to the autarch. Death to the autarch. Death to the autarch.
Towards the gunfire, I know it's the end, but For our freedom and for the those who're dead Our years of struggle, Our years in fear, now its over. revenge is near
gun in hand, and blood in eyes, searing wound, sleepless nights
there's his stronghold strike him now. his reign is over. And Now his death.
Al Maut
I was very excited about the final product and tried to get Lucas on board with future projects. But, unfortunately, he had moved on to different things.
